Outreach Program
About the Program
CEHG is committed to inspiring and educating the next generation of computational, evolutionary and human genomic scientists and giving back to the local Bay Area community that has provided a home base for our interdisciplinary research and collaborations. To this end, we have started a science education outreach program for local (Bay Area) middle- and high-school students.
In so doing, we hope to excite students about the wonderful world of genetics and STEM education, and we also aim to contribute to greater diversity among students and professionals working in STEM fields in the not-so-distant future. During the 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic school years, the program consisted of volunteer instructor visits to local middle-school classrooms and coordinated high school student visits to CEHG-member labs on Stanford campus.
Classroom Science Curriculum Support
Since 2015, CEHG staff members and volunteers have partnered with local educators and school administrators to develop and facilitate science-based curricula, enabling CEHG postdocs and grad students to share their love of science (and all things CEHG) with underserved student populations.

Stanford Lab Tour Events
During the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years, CEHG Outreach hosted a group of 25 9th and 10th grade students enrolled in Redwood City Sequoia High School's AVID (first generation college-bound) program. The itinerary spanned a half-day and included a brief campus tour, a panel discussion between the students and CEHG grads, postdoc scholars, and lab managers who shared their college experiences and advice for college success, and a coordinated series of lab demos showcasing current groundbreaking research being done in CEHG member labs across Stanford's School of Medicine.

Volunteer Discussion Panels
During the 2016-2017, 2017-18, and 2018-19 school years, CEHG postdoc and grad student volunteers have visited Monta Vista High School's Science National Honor Society in Cupertino, CA to give panel presentations geared toward preparing high school students for future STEM educational and professional success. CEHG postdoctoral volunteers also participated in the Bohannon Middle School's 2018 Career Day, presenting to four groups of high school students in San Lorenzo, CA on their educational backgrounds and current scientific research and professions.

Event Sponsorships
CEHG also provides financial and logistical support, as the budget allows, for CEHG community members who are organizing, or just participating in, science education outreach events on campus, in the Bay Area, and beyond. For example, during the summer of 2017, CEHG co-hosted (with the Global Nepali Professional Network, or GNPN) a one-day event for Bay Area Nepali students and their parents on Stanford campus.
